The most popular online retailer

E-commerce markets are becoming more competitive. As most of the powerful companies in retail dominate these markets (Amazon and Walmart), small niche entrepreneurs are also gaining traction as consumers look for more personalized services and unique products. Meanwhile, technology is developing rapidly, creating smarter websites, faster shipping, and better customer service.

Statista.com provides a ranking of the most popular online stores in the US in 2017, ranked by annual net e-commerce sales. In 2017, market leader Amazon.com generated $54.5 billion in sales in the United States. Walmart.com ranked second with a revenue of $14 billion.

A recent study by digital market intelligence firm Similar Web looked at traffic from American shoppers to general merchandise e-commerce sites from desktop and mobile customers rather than sales amounts. The results showed a slightly different ranking for 2018. While Amazon was the best general merchandise site, eBay ranked second, followed by Walmart.

More than half of the traffic to these sites (58 percent) came from mobile devices, with Walmart.com and Wish.com seeing the most traffic on mobile devices with over 60 percent and 80 percent, respectively.
